The rules of cold email changed dramatically when major email providers implemented stricter sender requirements. We've studied outbound trends across hundreds of agency campaigns to identify what separates high-performing outreach from everything else.
#Methodology
We analyzed campaign performance data from digital agencies targeting SMBs and mid-market companies between Q3 2025 and Q1 2026. We measured open rates, reply rates, and spam-flag rates across dozens of different cold email variables to identify the patterns that matter most.
#Key Finding 1: Less is More
Emails containing more than one hyperlink in the first touch suffered a dramatic decrease in inbox placement. The era of linking to your calendar, your website, and a case study in the first email is over. With today's spam filters, you must earn the right to share a link by first getting a reply.
#Key Finding 2: Specificity Wins Every Time
Subject lines that referenced a specific, observable issue about the prospect's business dramatically outperformed generic “first name/company name” merge field subject lines. Buyers want utility and proof you've done your homework—not fake familiarity.
“The agencies that outperform in 2026 share one trait: they treat every email as a miniature consulting engagement, not a numbers game.”
